The majority of Colquhoun’s paintings of flowers focus upon one species or a single specimen. This
work is unusual because it depicts a profusion of flowers from different species.
The support is a piece of reused canvas. On the reverse is a fragment of a cut-down painting, The Four
Elements (1928), which the artist has partly concealed with a wash of thin white paint.
