flowers in a greenhouse

1934

Oil on canvas. 24 x 18in. (61 x 45.7cm.) Signed COLQUHOUN upper left. Provenance Leva Gallery, London, from the Orion Gallery, Penzance, 1973. Galerie Roche, Syke, Germany. Hauswedell & Nolte, Hamburg, 13 June 2014, lot 148, ill. col. Private collection Exhibited Weybridge, 1934, no. 12. Cheltenham, Municipal Art Gallery, 1936, no. 12. London, Fine Art Society, 1936, no. 13. Penzance, Orion Gallery, 1973, no. 3. The majority of Colquhoun’s paintings of flowers focus upon one species or a single specimen. This work is unusual because it depicts a profusion of flowers from different species. The support is a piece of reused canvas. On the reverse is a fragment of a cut-down painting, The Four Elements (1928), which the artist has partly concealed with a wash of thin white paint.
