As was her common practice in her later years, Colquhoun inscribed the frames of earlier works with the
title, medium and year. She must have been relying on her memory as she frequently made errors. This is
one such instance. She inscribed the original frame with the title, c. 1948 and “automatism: entoptic
graphomania”. However, the automatic technique is clearly superautomatism, as given in the pricelist for
the 1976 Newlyn retrospective, which also dates the work to 1947, the year it was first exhibited.
The original frame has been removed and replaced by a British Museum mount.
